Description

Sweet Potato and Cranberry Gratin: a festive, sweet–savory holiday side dish layered with tender sweet potatoes, tart cranberries, rich melted cheese, and a golden crunchy topping. Cozy, colorful, and perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and winter gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish and arrange a layer of sliced sweet potatoes on the bottom.
  3. Sprinkle cranberries evenly over the potatoes.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream, maple syrup, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  5. Pour the cream mixture over the sweet potatoes and cranberries.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly across the top.
  7. Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the cheese.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Substitute mozzarella for Gruyère if you prefer a milder, meltier cheese.
  • Fresh or frozen cranberries both work; adjust sweetness if using tart berries.
  • Prepare ahead: assemble up to the breadcrumb butter topping, cover, chill, then bake as directed.
  • For a lighter version, use part-skim cheese and evaporated milk in place of heavy cream.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven until hot and bubbly.
