  • Diet: Halal

Description

Martha Stewart Christmas Breakfast: A delicious halal-friendly casserole inspired by Martha Stewart’s classic recipe, featuring sourdough bread, eggs, Gruyère, and a make-ahead preparation that makes holiday mornings effortless and elegant.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 lb halal turkey breakfast sausage
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 baking dish and add the cubed sourdough bread.
  2. In a skillet, cook the halal turkey sausage and onion over medium heat until browned.
  3. Spread the sausage mixture evenly over the bread.
  4. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère on top.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, heavy cream, milk, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the casserole.
  7. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight (8–12 hours).
  8. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Drizzle melted butter on top and bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes until golden, puffed, and set.
  10. Rest 5 minutes before serving, then garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • Halal-friendly version uses halal turkey sausage; you can substitute with another halal-certified sausage if desired.
  • Best prepared the night before to allow the bread to soak up the custard and flavors.
  • If using very fresh bread, you can toast the cubes lightly to help absorption.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute with a gluten-free sourdough or challah and ensure other ingredients are gluten-free.
  • Let the casserole rest for a few minutes after baking to help it set for cleaner portions.
